From an old interview by Luke Hamilton when Paul was in a band called Border Crossing.
1. Do you ever think you will write music for picture, I have listened to the album over and over and I feel that the music needs a moving Image, you are quoted as saying you never wanted to be in a band, I can hear film scores all over your work, is that where your really at ?
I was brought to music by a collection of paths and interests. My father always told me that music comes to us, we never control when or how. I developed a way of writing in which I would mentally project a scene from a film and write a score for that scene. I have no other way of writing and as my father said music comes to us. The music would come to me through an imaginary scene from an imaginary film. I don't really want to be in a band but I like the spirit of the people involved. Its a journey and everyone knows Im just here for the ride......Oh....and the music.
2. Have you written or produced anything for film ?
Only student films and the odd television credit. I have made films of walks in the country side and slowed everything down and put music to it. I have about twelve hours of that rubbish, there is about ten minutes that I love, its my wife jumping up and down in slow motion, I wrote a string part for that and got a friend to sync it all up. Its amazing and beautiful.
3. Where are your roots? Border Crossing is a Hip Hop band, Is that your natural selection ?
I could have joined and brought what I do to anything at that time, Im not stuck in any holes and I don't owe hip hop anything. Hip hop is a rhythm that makes up part of a sound and that sound can be anything from an orchestra to rock and roll. My natural selection and roots are to be found in what I end up writing and if you listen to it and can put me in a box then so be it, my roots are Irish, my music is me and what I feel and my natural selection changes every day.
